Abstract

This study aims to examine Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Mandīlī’s methodology in introducing and evaluating Shāfi‘ī jurisprudential works through his book Khazā’in al-Saniyyah min Mashāhīr al-Kutub al-Fiqhiyyah al-Shāfi‘iyyah. The significance of this study lies in its focus on an aspect that has received limited attention in previous studies, namely al-Mandīlī’s approach in serving the Shāfi‘ī legal heritage and guiding readers toward authoritative jurisprudential works within the madhhab. The study employed descriptive, analytical, and inductive methods through textual analysis of Khazā’in al-Saniyyah, with particular attention to the author’s method of arranging, documenting, and evaluating Shāfi‘ī legal texts. It also drew on relevant studies on Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Mandīlī and the intellectual tradition of Nusantara scholars. The findings of this study indicated that al-Mandīlī was not merely a compiler of jurisprudential titles but rather adopted a systematic scholarly methodology that reflects his awareness of the hierarchy of authoritative texts within the Shāfi‘ī school. This study also revealed his concern for scholarly documentation and the educational dimension in presenting jurisprudential works. Furthermore, this study demonstrated that Khazā’in al-Saniyyah represents a significant scholarly effort in guiding students toward authoritative references within the madhhab and in preserving the Shāfi‘ī legal heritage in the Malay intellectual environment.

Contributions: This study highlights the bibliographical methodology employed by Malay scholars in engaging with Islamic legal heritage and demonstrates Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Mandīlī’s role in preserving and sustaining the Shāfi‘ī intellectual tradition in the Malay world.
