Abstract

Al-Baghawī was a distinguished Quranic exegete of the 5th century AH. He is renowned for Ma‘ālim al-Tanzīl, which is regarded as one of the significant works of Quranic exegesis that has garnered continuous scholarly attention from the past to the present. Despite the esteemed scholarly status of al-Baghawī’s exegesis and its extensive use by exegetes and researchers, previous studies provide limited substantive discussion of his contributions to the rhetorical aspects of the Quran, particularly metonymy and metonymic meaning. This gap raises important questions regarding the depth of his rhetorical analysis, especially in comparison with exegetes renowned for their expertise in this field, such as al-Rāzī and al-Zamakhsharī. Accordingly, this study aimed to highlight the rhetorical indications presented by al-Baghawī to demonstrate his distinctive contribution to the field of rhetoric. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach to data collection and analysis, with particular emphasis on textual analysis. The primary focus was on metonymy in its analytical and applied investigation. To fulfil the objective, four textual samples were selected using purposive sampling. The samples were al-Nisā’ verse 21, al-A‘rāf verse 189, and al-Ḥajj verses 8, 9 and 11. The analysis revealed clear contributions of al-Baghawī’s exegesis to rhetorical indications, as he explicitly highlighted significant metonymic constructions. Although al-Baghawī’s exegesis does not extensively focus on the rhetorical analysis of the Quranic verses as some other rhetorical tafsirs, it remains a valuable reference for understanding metonymic meanings, particularly in verses containing metonymy. Therefore, this study recommends al-Baghawī’s exegesis in studies of rhetorical metonymy.

Author Biographies

Nasimah Abdullah, Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS), MALAYSIA.

She received her PhD in Arabic Linguistic Studies in 2015 and her Master of Human Sciences (Arabic as a Second Language) in 2000 from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She also holds a Bachelor of Human Sciences (Arabic Language and Literature) from the same university, obtained in 1997. Her research interests encompass Arabic linguistics, the teaching of Arabic as a second language, Arabic–Malay translation, and semantics. Furthermore, she holds several registered National Intellectual Property Rights related to innovations in Arabic learning and teaching. She has also actively participated in research funded by internal university grants as well as collaborative projects supported by partner institutions. She is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Language Studies and Arabic Linguistics, and serves as the Head of Programme for the Doctor of Philosophy in Arabic Studies at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Civilisation (FPPI), Selangor Islamic University (UIS). Previously, she served as Deputy Dean (Academic and Research Affairs) of FPPI, UIS from 2013 to 2018. Prior to that, she was the Acting Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK), UIS in 2012, and the Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Academy of Islamic Studies (AI), UIS from 2005 to 2007. Lubna Abd Rahman, Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), MALAYSIA.

She is currently an Associate Professor at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM). She obtained her PhD in Arabic Linguistic Studies in 2016 and her Master’s degree in Arabic Linguistics in 2004 from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She also holds a Bachelor of Human Sciences (Arabic Language and Literature) from the same university, which she completed in 1998. Her research interests include Arabic linguistics and translation studies, with particular emphasis on Arabic–Malay translation. Since 2006, she has actively presented academic papers at both national and international conferences. She has also produced a number of scholarly publications, including conference proceedings, book chapters, journal articles and academic books. In addition, she has been actively involved in research projects funded by Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia and  as well as the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MoHE). She has also collaborated with Universiti Islam Selangor in several research grant projects. She previously held an administrative position at the Faculty of Major Language Studies, USIM, serving as the coordinator (Munassiq) for the Master’s programme in Arabic Language (Translation). Saifulah Samsudin, Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS), MALAYSIA.

He obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arabic Linguistic Studies in 2015 and his Master of Islamic Studies (Language) in 2004 from National University of Malaysia (UKM). He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arabic Language and Literature from Yarmouk University, earned in 1999. His research interests include Arabic linguistics, the teaching of Arabic as a second language, Arabic–Malay translation, and semantics. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Language Studies and Arabic Linguistics, and serves as the Head of Programme for the Bachelor of Islamic Studies in Arabic Translation at the Faculty of Islamic Studies and Civilisation (FPPI), Selangor Islamic University (UIS). Previously, he served as the Head of the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the Academy of Islamic Studies (AI), UIS from 2007 to 2010. He can be reached at saifulah@uis.edu.my.

Mohamed Ismaili Alaoui, Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Av Med V, BP591, Bani-Mellal 23000, MOROCCO

Professor of Grammar and Linguistics in the Department of Arabic Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Sultan Moulay Slimane University, Beni Mellal, Kingdom of Morocco. He also serves as an Instructor of Arabic as a Foreign Language in the Arabic Language Program at Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco. His academic specialization lies in Arabic grammar and linguistics, with particular interest in theoretical and existential dimensions of the Arabic language. Among his published works are two notable articles: The Arabic Language as a Biological and Existential Language, Part One (28 November 2013), and The Arabic Language as a Biological and Existential Language, Part Two: Pronouns and Their Existential Function (4 December 2013). In these writings, he explores Arabic as a living, dynamic system, emphasizing the existential role of pronouns and their functional significance within linguistic structure.
